People Development Manager

As our People Development Manager, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of learning which drives high performance, develops future potential, and retains talent within the Firm.


  • Design and deliver engaging content for practical, advisory, management and leadership skills learning solutions – using blended learning approaches.
  • Champion a learning culture and drive the development of the HL Academy, ensuring content, delivery methods and material remain innovative and aligned with business priorities.
  • Identify and address learning needs by collaborating with senior management and working closely with the People Team in a unified ‘one team’ approach. This includes exploring how learning can enhance engagement and retention across the Firm.
  • Build strong partnerships with external training providers, professional bodies, and local schools, colleges, and universities to enhance talent pipelines.
  • Support the Head of People with annual training needs analysis, using data-driven insights to set priorities and identify solutions that support the Firm’s strategic goals.
  • Manage and optimise the trainee programmes in conjunction with the Training Principal and line managers, ensuring structured progression, exam success, and compliance with training providers.
  • Design, administer, and interpret psychometric assessments to support recruitment, promotion, and development decisions. Use assessment data to provide actionable insights that inform talent strategies and individual development plans.
  • Create personalised onboarding learning plans for new starters, integrating mandatory training and role-specific development.
  • Deliver results quickly and effectively as an individual contributor within a collaborative team structure. Manage priorities and handle multiple learning projects at the same time
  • Provide support to the Head of People on projects as required.

  • Degree or equivalent experience in Learning & Development, HR, or a related field; CIPD or similar qualification desirable.
  • Proven L&D experience, ideally in professional services.
  • Strong leadership, strategic thinking, and commercial awareness.
  • Excellent communication, facilitation, and presentation skills (written and verbal).
  • Skilled at building credibility and strong relationships with senior stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritise effectively, and deliver results at pace.
  • Confident in analysing data and turning insights into action.
  • Collaborative and innovative, with a proactive approach to championing a learning culture.
  • Self-motivated, able to work independently and under pressure.
  • Experience in running psychometric tests and analysing results for recruitment, promotion, and development purposes. Ability to translate assessment outcomes into meaningful recommendations for stakeholders.
  • Willingness to travel across all 4 offices – Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow.
