There are some fantastic business competitions for start-up, growing and established businesses in Scotland. Here, we take a look at some of the best business competitions in Scotland.
What is Scottish EDGE?
“Scottish EDGE is a competition aimed at identifying and supporting Scotland’s up-and-coming, innovative, high-growth entrepreneurial talent.”
If you have an innovative, high-growth potential business then you could win up to £100,000 plus a fantastic package of support from Scottish EDGE. The application process consists of an online application form and production of a 3-minute video presentation
To date they have awarded £9m, received 2,458 applications, supported 263 businesses and generated 981 jobs. There are three competitions to enter; Scottish EDGE, Wild Card EDGE and Young EDGE.
What is Converge Challenge?
“Converge Challenge is a high-profile pan-Scotland company creation competition and entrepreneurship development programme for staff, students, and recent graduates of Scottish Universities and Research Institutes aimed at creating a new generation of entrepreneurs in Scotland.”
The Converge Challenge brings together the most ambitious and creative thinkers from academia, research and business. Open to staff, students and graduates at all Scottish Universities and Research Institutes, the Converge Challenge works with any industry sector, product or service-based ideas at any stage of development
What is the AccelerateHER?
“The AccelerateHER Awards is open to entrepreneurial women-led businesses based in Scotland. The competition provides a fantastic opportunity for growth aspiring businesswomen to showcase their companies before an audience, which includes angel investors, commercial advisers and fellow entrepreneurs. The competition gives participants a platform for attracting business angel investment with at least two finalists securing a trip to California.”
The winners also benefit from access to US and wider international market opportunities and will be directly connected with potential financiers from across the globe who gather at a summit of investors in San Francisco. Entrants will initially be asked to submit a video pitch via a dedicated YouTube channel outlining their business, its ambitions, growth plans and investor potential. All those who register will access free professional pitch advice and webinar training, with the finalists also accessing 1:1 coaching to harness their creativity and improve their presentation style.
What is the Elevator Challenge?
“Elevator is a social enterprise dedicated to supporting entrepreneurs, business leaders and employees of today and tomorrow. Elevator have 18 locations spread across Scotland from Perth to Banff.”
The Elevator Challenge 2017 has 30 free places available for individuals between the ages of 18 and 30 who live, work or study in Grampian or Tayside to join their programme. The programme is for those who have a start-up business or are thinking about setting one up. Transport (pick-ups from Aberdeen, Dundee and Perth), accommodation, food and activities are all covered.

What is the Sporting Chance Initiative?
“The Sports Innovation Challenge is an opportunity for students and recent graduates to develop an innovative idea for a sports product, service and/or technology. The competition seeks to foster the innovative talent pool that exists within Universities and Colleges to generate and develop new ideas that can enhance the world of sport.”
Each winner receives £3,000 cash towards their business, a one year business incubation package, £3,000 worth of complimentary services and mentoring support from sports industry experts.
What is Think BIG?
“The Think Big competition provides development support to businesses, including social enterprises, in the Dundee and Angus area. In addition to cash prizes, winners will be awarded appropriate assistance from local business experts, which could include legal advice, support with accounts or creation of a website.”
There are two categories available to enter; one is for pre-start or new start businesses that have been trading for less than one year and the second category is for businesses that have been trading for over one, and up to five years.

What is the Innovator Launchpad?
“Innovator Launchpad is run by intellectual property firm Murgitroyd. It is a competition for innovators to collaborate, access resources and compete for funding.”
The competition offers £5,000 cash and £2,500 in IP services and PR support to a pre-profit business or charity based in the UK who can show that they have created a ground-breaking solution to a business or social problem.
