We understand that businesses often have questions about corporation tax. Here, we address some of the most common queries to help you gain a better understanding of this important topic.

Corporation tax is a tax levied on the profits of companies operating in the UK. It applies to both UK-resident companies and non-UK incorporated companies with a taxable presence in the UK.

Corporation tax is payable annually and is usually due nine months and one day after the end of the company’s accounting period. However, for companies with large profits or those with other related entities, there may be a requirement to make corporate tax payments on an instalment basis.

Allowable expenses for corporation tax purposes include costs incurred wholly and exclusively for the purpose of the trade, such as employee salaries, office rent, and business-related travel expenses.

Yes, there are various tax reliefs and incentives available to reduce corporation tax liabilities, such as Research & Development tax credits, capital allowances, and reliefs when a qualifying trading company within a group is sold.

Penalties for non-compliance with corporation tax regulations can vary depending on the circumstances.

  • 1 day late after deadline: £100
  • 3 months late after deadline: Another £100
  • 6 months late after deadline: Additional 10% tax geared penalty.  This is based on the unpaid tax at that date.
  • 12 months late after deadline: Another 10% tax geared penalty of any unpaid tax.
  • If 3 returns are late in consecutive periods, the flat rate penalties increase from £100 to £500.

Ensuring compliance with corporation tax regulations involves maintaining accurate financial records, filing tax returns on time, and staying informed about changes to tax laws and regulations.

Seeking advice from tax professionals like Henderson Loggie can help you navigate the process and ensure your business meets all its compliance obligations.
