How I Got Into Forensic Accounting: Natalie Grant

My journey to begin working in Forensic Accounting started as many career journeys do: not really knowing what to do “when I grow up”. I studied Law at university but soon discovered that whilst I enjoyed the analytical and problem-solving side of the law, a career as a solicitor was unlikely to be the career for me.

During university, I was given the opportunity to work with a small boutique accountancy firm specialising in insolvency and forensic accounting. It was here that I gained an understanding of an area of accounting that I was totally unfamiliar with. I was exposed to work that went beyond what I understood to be “traditional accounting” that required both technical knowledge and an investigative mindset. After university, I began working with this firm full-time, initially under the guise of deciding what to do next.

Ten years later, I was a qualified chartered accountant and had found my niche in forensic accounting, with a focus on cases relating to the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 and judicial factories. Working on matters related to criminal investigations exposed me to the process of analysing financial records to establish the extent of criminal activity. It required precision, attention to detail, and the ability to interpret complex financial data within a legal framework. Similarly, working on judicial factories provided insight into managing and investigating financial affairs in sensitive and often complex situations.

I found Forensic Accounting to be the perfect blend of those skills developed studying law and financial analysis, effectively using numbers as evidence to tell a bigger story. This investigative approach resonated with me and reinforced that I had found the right path.

I am looking forward to continuing to develop my skills as a forensic accountant at Henderson Loggie and expanding on the knowledge gained to provide support for matrimonial disputes and litigation support.
